If I do a good job, in the end, you won’t need me
Isn’t that a scary phrase for anyone on a mission? I mean, in the end, we all want to feel needed. This is precisely what makes this statement so frightful. Luckily there’s a solution.
I’ve seen people struggle during transitions a couple of times now, myself included. The latest example being my dad, transitioning into the paradise advertised as retirement.
You see, my dad used to be a high-ranked manager, and even though he enjoyed the gradual phasing out of work, when he did step down, the crisis was rather evident.
He didn’t go into a depression or anything of that sort. It was more that he clearly missed a sense of feeling needed, a sense of importance.
I’ve heard there are three pillars in most peoples lives: place, family and purpose. The place, would for most of us signify where we feel at home. Family, as you might guess, would be whomever we consider our inner support group, while purpose, for many of us equals our jobs.
Now imagine that one day, you lost your purpose, and no one had prepared you for it.
